Our belief system is based upon the accumulation of verbal and non verbal suggestions that have been gathered throughout our life experience. Through patterns of repetition, we learn to create our own perception of reality. In elementary school, we repeated over and over that 2 x 2 = 4, 3 x 6 = 18, 5 x 5 = 25 and so on. Once we formed mental patterns for these facts, we just know them without having to consciously think about it (like tying your shoe or cooking an egg). They become ‘beliefs’. In essence, we therefore become what we think. So what people belief to be true is that which is coherent to their already established cache of truisms into subconscious mind. This cache is significantly shaped and developed over time by genetically and environmentally. So each new proposition is analyzed in relationship to what already exist into cache. If this cache developed poorly and illogically then people become doubtful and feel fear to success. In such case people need to change their negative beliefs with positive and empowering beliefs.
For example, when a child elephant of circus brought from jungle, used to be tied-in with a small piece of chain. At the beginning, he keeps trying to break the chain but when he can not break it after so many tries then he beliefs for the rest of his life that he never can break it. So he never attempts to do it again in future, even when he is grown up and capable to do it. Doesn’t he need to change his belief systems?
Another example, if a child is ridiculed by parents & teachers and told he is stupid then he will believe that he is indeed stupid. He will act that way, too. He gives up trying to be clever, he makes mistakes. By the time that child is grown up, he is firmly convinced he is stupid, ugly, shy, nervous, clumsy, forgetful and so on. Doesn’t he need to change his belief systems?
We have already seen that most people carry around feelings of inferiority from their childhood. These feelings are buried in the subconscious mind. No doubt you too, have a list of your own faults that you carry around with. Well, it may be true that you have been unsuccessful in the past at learning the piano, fixing the car, playing bridge, painting pictures, cooking omelet, or whatever. But this is no reason why you should not be successful at these things in the future if you want to. To say: “I am no good at wood-work” is simply to tie a label around your own neck – a label that prevents you from ever being good at wood-work. You might as well say: “I am no good at swimming” and then prove it by tying a heavy stone around your neck! In the same way, the fact that you once failed a driving test, an exam or a job interview, is not the end of the world. You always have another chance to try again if you want to. Remember: your limitations exist only in your own mind. As long as you believe in saying: “I cannot do it”, you will hold yourself back. Such limiting beliefs are the true killers. They stop us from taking the actions we need to take to create our ideal lives. They not only hold you back but also stop us from living the lives we love!
You see for many many years it was believed that no one can run a mile in less than 4 minutes. Thousands of runners had tried it but no one was able to do it.
Roger Bannister refused to accept this limiting belief. He told himself that it is possible; and someone like him could do it. On 6th May 1954, he ran a mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. Six weeks later John Landy from Australia ran a mile in 3 minutes and 58 seconds.
Everyday you are bombarded with a series of negative thoughts, negative messages and as you continue to absorb all of these negative messages you create a negative thinking pattern that leads to negative and limiting beliefs. Negative thoughts are like weeds – if you don’t take care of them and clear them early on – they will take over your entire mind and destroy any positive thoughts and beliefs.
Some examples of limiting beliefs and enabling beliefs –
We tend to notice the things that support our cherished beliefs, and ignore those that don’t. This is why different people can hold different views about politics, religion, sport, education, etc — even though they are using the same facts! Unconsciously, each person selects only those facts that support his own arguments.
Naturally you are no good at things you never try to do. And you will never get to be good at them, either … unless you try. (And who knows-you might enjoy them!). Further – is there any law that says you have to be good at things before you can do them. Of course not! You may be the world’s worst guitar player. But if you like playing – go ahead and do it! You are sure to improve. And don’t worry if people laugh. If a man is a better guitar player than you – fine! If he laughs at your efforts, it shows he is somewhat insensitive. His opinion of you does not limit you – it limits him. Always remember that the people who laugh are afraid. However expert they are now, they were once beginners like you. They are afraid you will become expert, and then they will no longer be superior to you. Let them laugh at you. Laugh with them if you like. They have no power over you. You don’t need their permission to learn.
All you have to do is remove one set of ideas, and replace it with another. But how? First you must realize how long it took to implant the negative ideas in your mind. Assuming you have had these ideas since you were six years old, you can work it out for yourself. If you are 16 now, you’ve been carrying negative thoughts around with you for 10 years!
Clearly, you won’t get rid of these ideas overnight. It will take a few weeks – or even months. But you have everything to gain – and nothing to lose – by starting today.
Most people are not even aware of the thoughts they have everyday, and they don’t choose their beliefs. Instead they are constantly sending the wrong messages or wrong instructions to their subconscious mind. And that’s how they end up creating the life that they don’t want.
If you want to start achieving your goals and live the life you want then you have to change your thoughts and beliefs, you have to send the right messages to your subconscious mind. Start instructing your subconscious mind to help you live the life you want, because your subconscious mind picks up on your thoughts and beliefs and goes out and creates situations that correspond to your thoughts and beliefs.
How your life unfolds depends on what is going on inside – it depends on the thoughts that you regularly have, because the thoughts create your beliefs and your beliefs create your reality.
Your thoughts are the most powerful forces you have – they can launch you to success, happiness, wealth, abundance and more. So when you focus on the positive, you create positive beliefs and a positive lifestyle.
But if you don’t choose the right thoughts you will experience failure, misery, poverty and everything that you don’t want. So when you think negative you have negative beliefs and a negative lifestyle.
As you can get subconscious idea that you are ugly, stupid or clumsy, so can you get the idea that you are clever, good-looking and dexterous? Just as one set of subconscious ideas can hold you back from success, then another set can of ideas push you towards success!
What are these thoughts and where do they come from?
They come from you friends, your family, fellow co-workers, advisers, teachers, even strangers – and they come from you – that’s right! You often create most of the negative thoughts that you have – and it’s only because you haven’t trained your mind to be positive and you haven’t created positive beliefs that allow you to succeed.
Once your subconscious mind picks up on your new positive belief system – you’ll see your entire life change. Don’t waste another minute keeping negative thought. Eliminate the negative and useless thoughts. Begin empowering yourself. Start believing in yourself – create a positive belief system and you’ll begin to achieve your goals in no time.
This means that you focus on positive situations, understand that things will work out, looking for solutions instead of complaining, be more understanding instead of getting angry, try to look at things from a different perspective, embrace changes and look for opportunities instead of focusing on the problems and no longer believing that the worst will happen.
“This all sounds great, but how soon can I get results?”
How soon you get results really depends on how much you need to change. If you’re a chronic negative thinker, if you have a doom and gloom or poor attitude, it’s going to take a little longer than someone who is already a little more positive. You’re really changing the way you think and live and that change is not going to happen overnight. It’s a one step at a time process.
Our beliefs are the ‘main controlling mechanism’ for creating the people we become. They dictate how we feel, what we think, and how we ‘frame’ our experiences on a moment-by-moment basis. Your life, your circumstances are all a mirror of your beliefs. Your life today is based on your thoughts and beliefs. The life you live tomorrow is based on the thoughts, actions and beliefs you hold today. Change those and change your life.
How you can create a Positive Belief System?
Discover what beliefs are holding you back. Once you’ve identified your limiting or negative beliefs you can begin to change them.
At first this won’t be easy but as you continually change the way you think and see things you’ll begin to naturally attract more positive situations into your life.
If you close your mind you limit yourself to possibilities and when you do that you reduce your chances of getting what you really want. You actually handcuff your subconscious mind because you don’t give it enough chances to help you succeed.
The subconscious mind is a permanent storeroom of memory. Suppose one had been bitten by a dog at the age of 10, one will continue to be scared of dogs for the rest of his/her life viewing it from the childhood experience. This is because our subconscious mind remembers the incident. The conscious mind may forget but the subconscious mind remembers in greatest detail unless the event is cancelled from the memory.
